My name is Jake Keyel. I’m an assistant professor of sociology at Rowan University in New Jersey. My research and teaching focus on war, displacement, and refugee resettlement.
My first book, Resettled Iraqi Refugees in the United States: War, Refuge, Belonging, Participation, and Protest (Berghahn, 2023), explores the experiences of those who left Iraq and resettled in the US as a result of the 2003 American-led invasion and occupation.
My second book, Care over Cruelty: American Wars, Displacement, and Refugee Resettlement (De Gruyter, 2026), examines how the care of refugee resettlement might be enacted as practices of peacemaking and anti-war politics. It concludes by arguing for the need to move beyond “nations” toward an internationalist socialism.
Expanding on the conclusions in Care over Cruelty, I am writing a third book, Beyond Nationalism: Post-National Politics in an Age of Ethno-Religious Conflict (Anthem Press, Forthcoming) that explores contemporary nationalism, its empty myths, and how we might overcome it.
I am currently soliciting essay submissions for the inaugural Reimagining Peace Award. If you have a vision for more peaceful futures, please consider submitting.
